First look behind the clubhouse before the ceremony - Pawleys Plantation

Beautiful spring wedding at Pawleys Plantation Country Club with a first look and great sunset

This wedding was a great way to begin my 2016 season. I always love going to the Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club area to photograph a wedding. I’ve been there so many times that I know the best photo spots and where to get good light during different times of the afternoon. This bride and groom decided to do a “first look” so that we could do all the bridal party and family pictures before the ceremony. Doing most of the pictures before the ceremony can be nice, but you need a location like Pawleys Plantation with lots of …

Outdoor wedding at the Barefoot Resort Dye Club with a wild cake cutting and sparkler exit

It’s been a number of years since I’ve photographed a wedding at the Dye Club in Barefoot Resort. I’m glad to be back there for a wedding it’s a very pretty area. The Dye Club has a very traditionally elegant dining room with enough tables for a large group. I lit some of the candles so I could get nice details shots earlier in the day while no one was inside.  There is also a large dance floor area and separate area with the bar where the buffet line was setup.  Below I put a picture of the dress hanging from …

Beautiful sunset portrait of bride and groom on the Wacammaw River

Beautiful afternoon wedding at Wachesaw Plantation with a horse drawn carriage

I always love going to Wachesaw Plantation for a wedding, the oak trees on the Waccamaw River make a great backdrop for pictures, especially at sunset. It’s been a long time since I’ve photographed a wedding with a horse and carriage, it always makes for some really great pictures. I guess riding in on a carriage is the type of thing you really have to be at a plantation or garden style location like Wachesaw for it to work. I got the business card of the carriage company so I’ll add it to my favorite vendors page, maybe it will give some brides …

Heritage Plantation wedding photography at the Clubhouse and the new Nikon D810

A few weeks ago I photographed another beautiful wedding at the Heritage Plantation clubhouse in Pawleys Island, SC.  It’s been a few years since I’ve been there, it’s a great location so hopefully I can get on their vendor list and get some more weddings at the club. A couple of fun things about this wedding, they had the Clemson Tiger mascot come in as a surprise to the groom at the reception.  Whoever was wearing the outfit was a lot of fun and livened up the evening.  They also had a live band which did a great job.  The groom …

Bride and groom sitting together of golf course greens

Early afternoon wedding photography at Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club with a fun couple

Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club is one of my favorite locations that I photograph weddings at often.  The staff is very friendly and helpful and the site is great for photography. There isn’t much I can say that I haven’t said in some of my earlier blog posts about the site.  This wedding ceremony was in the early afternoon, so we had some harsh sunlight during the ceremony, but it wasn’t too bad.  The golf course behind the clubhouse is a great place for a wedding and for pictures after, it is nice to do everything in the same area …

Beautiful Afternoon wedding at Wachesaw Plantation

It’s been a while since I’ve been to Wachesaw Plantation for a wedding. It’s a really pretty wedding site on the Waccamaw River, it’s especially nice at sunset the way the light filters through the many trees. The bride and groom at this wedding wanted to do a first look so they could get most of the wedding pictures done before the ceremony. That is actually a nice way to do things because the couple can start having fun as soon as the ceremony is over. This also means though that most of the pictures would be done earlier in the day …

Couple kissing on the fallen tree

Pawleys Plantation wedding with a Beauty and the Beast themed reception

I always love going to Pawleys Plantation Golf Club for a wedding, it’s a very pretty area and the staff there is very nice.  I really loved the bride’s dress at this wedding, she had a Beauty and the Beast Disney theme to the dress and wedding reception.  You can see some pictures of the ballroom decorations below.  I recently got a new 14mm prime lens so I was enjoying playing around with some super wide-angle shots of the reception decorations.  Looking through the lens is so wide though I realized I was almost sticking my camera in the cake without realizing it.  It’s not the kind of lens that I will use often, but it’s fun for a few shots here and there.  I also finally got a really big case to carry all my gear. It’s the largest Lowepro rolling case they have.  It looks like a big suitcase, but inside it has dividers for photo gear.  I have my 4 camera bodies, flashes, various lenses etc. all organized together in one case.

The wedding ceremony was a few hours before sunset, so after the bride and groom finished eating I took them back out of the reception for some sunset pictures. When the days start getting longer, most ceremonies will be a while before sunset, so if possible I always try to get the couple out for some sunset pictures when the light is much softer.  At least at locations like Pawleys Plantation with a lot of trees, there is always somewhere to get some shade from the sun.  I hope you enjoy the pictures below, please let me know in the comments below if you do.

Couple laying together in the sand - Litchfield Beach

Engagement pictures at the Litchfield Golf and Beach Club

I had the opportunity to do engagement pictures for this very nice couple staying at the Litchfield Golf and Beach Club. I’ve done weddings in this area before, but I’ve never been there just for engagement pictures. I’m glad they suggested doing them there because it is a really pretty area. I knew some of the spots I liked out in front of the club from previous weddings, it’s always great when you can get some nice light coming through the leaves of oak trees. Using a really good lens turns blurs out the background sunlight in a really pretty way. The fallen oak is a very popular spot to do pictures as well, it can just be challenging to get shots without any cars in the background.

After doing pictures out in front of the club we went back to some hammocks that the couple had noticed. Then we went down to the beach at the beach club area. The weather was just about perfect and the water looked really blue that evening. Of course, if they weren’t staying in the area we could have done the pictures out front, but you need to have a pass to actually get into the area where we went on the beach. At the end of the session we even did a little pretend proposal just for fun. This was a really beautiful evening and a fun couple, they had been together for over 10 years but were still up for being romantic.  I’m sure you will enjoy the pictures below.  Please comment below or share these pictures if you like them.

Fun series of shots of groomsmen jumping

First ever wedding on the Barefoot Resort Love Course with a bit of Dr. Who

This was the first ever wedding held at this spot on the Barefoot Resort and Golf Love Course. It was held at a really nice spot where they have the recreated ruins of an old plantation home along holes 3-7. The mother and father of the groom were long time members of Barefoot resort, so they were given the special opportunity to do a wedding at this spot. I’ve done lots of weddings backing up to golf courses, but never one where there were no golfers to watch out for. This was special because the entire course was closed down for us, we had the location to ourselves with no one else around.

As you can see below, the couple decided to do a first look to get some of the pictures done before the ceremony. I really like the storyboard format of my blog now, it’s easier to show something like a first look that can be hard to express in a single picture. Thanks to it being cloudy, even though it was earlier in the day we didn’t have a problem with the harsh sunlight. The couple are big fans of the Dr. Who series, so we incorporated that in some of the pictures. The wedding planner Elizabeth Hodges, that I’ve worked with a lot, her son came dressed at The Dr. He looked like he could fit right into that series, he really made a convincing look-alike. I really loved the look of the Tuxedos worn by the groomsmen, and the groom’s top hat. I hope you enjoy some of the pictures below, please comment if you do.

Early afternoon wedding at the Pine Lakes Country Club

This is the first wedding ceremony I’ve done at the Pine Lakes Country Club. It was a small wedding early on a Friday afternoon and it tuned out very nice. Not having a big bridal party can actually be a lot less stressful. The wedding ceremony was at a bad time of the day for the sun, but thankfully the back of the club has a nice shaded area for the ceremony.  We went down to the beach briefly for some pictures after the ceremony, and then back out for some sunset pictures later in the evening.  I’m really liking …
