Summer wedding at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club – Myrtle Beach

It’s finally beginning to slow down around the Myrtle Beach area with many of the schools back in session after the summer break. With family photo sessions many evenings and multiple weddings on some weekends, I haven’t had time to post to my blog in a while. While I’m working hard now on getting caught …

Family portraits at the Huntington Beach State Park with a happy family of 6

I had a lot of fun taking portraits of this family of 6 at the Atalaya Castle area and beach in the Huntington Beach State Park. Even though it was hot and a little windy, the family was very happy to be taking pictures and had great smiles from the beginning. We have had some …

Engagement portraits at the Garden City Pier and Atalaya Castle

These engagement portraits were for a fun couple getting married very soon in August.  I always prefer doing engagement portraits for a couple before I photograph their wedding, that is why I offer a discounted engagement session for wedding clients.  It’s a nice way to get to know each other and make sure that they …

Fun engagement pictures in Garden City on a cold afternoon and Storyboard 3

I haven’t had a chance to blog about engagement portraits in a while. Things are getting slow so I thought I would post some pictures from this recent cold weather engagement session down at the southern tip of Garden City Beach. I’ve done many photo sessions down in Garden City, but this one was unusual because they …

Beach house wedding at Holden Beach, one of my favorite beach locations.

This is the second time I’ve been to this particular beach house in Holden Beach, NC for a wedding.  Because of my earlier wedding there, I was told that I came highly recommended, so that is always nice. I’ve been to many different beach locations for weddings and this one is pretty unique. Almost anywhere you go around this area, the houses are built right up next to the ocean, in some spots at high tide there is hardly any beach even left. In this area the beach houses were built far back from the ocean. There is a long walk down to the beach through natural sand dunes and beach grass that feels a lot different from any locations in the Myrtle Beach area. There is even a large lake between the ocean and some of the beach houses, it is a really pretty area. Even though it’s a bit of a drive for me I enjoyed getting to go up to this area again.

On a different subject, you might have noticed a lot of changes to my website. Every once in a while, you really have to rebuild a website from scratch, to keep it modern and up to date. This new design is mobile first. This means that it looks great on a tablet or phone, but will scale to a full desktop as well. It’s the opposite of the way things used to be designed. The most important thing is how it looks on a mobile device. Instead of building everything from scratch, it’s build on the popular Bootstrap framework. It makes a responsive website design that scales from desktop to mobile a lot easier to do. I’m also using a Flat UI design that is a lot more modern looking now. The site will get better looking over time as I work on it, but everything is functioning well now.  If you see any bugs or mistakes please let me know.

I hope you enjoy some of the pictures below, please let me know in the comments if you do.

Cold and windy day for engagement pictures at the Myrtle Beach State Park

There are always a couple of winter months where no one is looking to have portraits done outdoors or on the beach. During those months I always have some things to do like wedding album layouts and catching up with clients about orders from the previous year, but it’s nice to be getting busy taking fresh pictures again. I seem to be getting an early start this year with not only some engagement sessions but even a wedding this coming weekend.

The engagement session I’m highlighting this time was for a couple with an upcoming wedding I’m photographing this summer. It was a very cold and windy day at the Myrtle Beach State Park. I guess because the ocean temperature is so low right now, it seemed much colder on the beach then it did a little bit inland. Thankfully I brought along a sweatshirt, but I was still really cold even with that on. As cold as I was I felt really bad for the couple because they were just freezing in what they were wearing, I felt a little guilty in my sweatshirt. They wanted to go for it anyway, and I think we managed to get some really good pictures even with the wind and cold. In fact, the sky had an unusual look that day that I think gave some nice interest to the pictures, and we were the only ones on the beach which was nice. I guess a girl knows she has a pretty good guy if he will stay in a good mood through the cold and even three different outfit changes :) It makes me look forward to the wedding knowing a couple is easy going and will make the best of things.

Small beach house wedding down in Garden City, SC

I really think think the beach house wedding is a great idea if you are planning for a smaller, more intimate ceremony and if it is the time of the year when the weather is nice. I’ve had a lot of previous clients that will rent a large beach house, have the wedding down on the beach, and then the reception in the backyard of the house. I’m sure this has to be a lot easier on a budget than many of the popular hotel and club locations.  Sometimes I can even get better pictures of a couple at a smaller, less involved event because time is usually more flexible and everyone is more relaxed.

The couple I’m featuring in this post had a small ceremony down in the Garden City area. When you get far enough south in Garden City there are some great wedding spots. I really enjoyed photographing the couple on the small rock jetty that was within walking distance from the beach house. We were able to do some fun and probably a little bit dangerous pictures up on the rocks.  I wish we had done it a bit closer to sunset to cut down on some of the shadows, but it still turned out nice.  After doing some beach pictures we hopped on a golf cart and found an empty house on the inlet side where we could do a few more sunset pictures.

A picture I really liked from the collection below is a simple one of the bride standing in window light. There is nothing technically difficult about this shot, it’s just the camera exposed for the light coming in the window.  The light coming in is so much brighter than the room that it gives some nice drama to the picture.  The couple also, I believe due to my suggestion, hung up a lot of small decorative lights that really made a nice background for some of the dancing shots at the end of this gallery. I hope you enjoy some of the pictures below, please let me know in the comment area below the pictures if you do!
